Handy A/V Location Guidance

Susannah created this chart for her staff and students and it's a great alternative to the one I posted last year, a blog ago!  Here is the link: AV location guidance 2007.doc

Update on Juvenile Collection

I'm pleased to report that the signage is partially completed and the remaining signs will be finished and installed next week.  The two columns nearest the skylight windows have "Juvenile Collection" on them in a large, teal font.  This lettering is very visible from a distance and it is on two sides of one of the columns.  Next week we will have signs identifying the three sections that comprise our juvenile collection, i.e. Juvenile EZ, Juvenile Fiction, and Juvenile Biography.  The tables and chairs have arrived and Physical Plant will assemble them so they should be in place next week as well.  Kathryn is ordering some posters which will be installed when they arrive in the library.  Go take a look and tell me what you think!

ILLiad Registration Procedures, etc.

1.        The ILLiad registration form requires an entry in Field 11, mailing address and undergrads are asked to put in their campus mail box.  We have learned that campus mail boxes are now only issued to on-campus students so we need to change our form and will do so. Any entry in that field will meet the “text requirement” so if you get a question about this prior to our changing our instruction, just ask the student to type undergraduate.

2.        In the rare event that we receive a paper (print) copy of an ILL request for an undergraduate, we put that article in an envelope and send it to that person’s campus box or if they don’t have a box, to the Circulation/customer Services desk for pickup.  As much as we’d like to, we’re not equipped staffing wise to scan those articles and deliver them electronically for our undergraduate students.

First Aid Kits

There are several American Red Cross First Aid kits in the library for you to use when necessary.  The locations for the kits are as follows:

    @Circulation/Customer Services Desk

    @Technical Services - in bottom cabinet beside the sink

    @Special Collections

    @Honors office

    @Archives

A/V Media Room Access (card reader)

Access to this space is now available to anyone with a valid UNCW OneCard-this includes students, faculty, and staff.  To gain entry, hold the card in front of the sensor for about five seconds and the lights should flash green followed by an audible unlocking sound and you're in!  Customer Service/Circuclation does have a key if there is a problem with that lock.

New GRAD Computer Lab on 2nd floor

A new computer collaboration space for Graduate students is available on the 2nd floor, room 2059 (as you face the Government documents office, it's on your left). Access to this space is also via a card reader and it works the same as the one on the A/V Media Room.  All graduate students should have access to this space and the existing Graduate Lab at the beginning of fall semester.  The older Grad lab continues to use card swipe technology and problems with access to either lab should go to Phoebe Tseh at x4269.

Weather Radios

We have several weather radios in the library and they can be programmed to issue alerts whenever one is issued by the National Weather Service.  The alerts can include toranadoes, hurricanes, floods, ice/snow storms, and other severe weaher warnings.  Other emergencies are covered as well and this inlcudes amber alerts, fires, chemical spills, etc. to name just a few.  Radios are in Madeleine's office, in Special Collections, Government Documents office and at Circ.  If an alert for severe weather such as tornadoes, hurricanes, or floods is issued, all staff will be informed via email by one of the members of the Emergency Preparedness committee.

Expanded TAC Hours!

Monday - Thursday        7:30 am - 11:00

Friday                             7:30 am - 5:30 pm

Sunday                           Noon - 11:00 pm

MP 3 Players

The library has 4 MP 3 players available for checkout at the circulation/customer services desk.  The loan period is 3 weeks (to match some of the NetLibrary checkout times) and faculty, staff, and students are eligible to borrow one.  Each player is in its own individual baggie, complete with ear buds-no, I don't anticipate the ear buds lasting a long time but that is how they were purchased.  The brand name  is  Nano Rio and they are supposed to be  good players. You can locate these players in the catalog by searching MP 3 player or MP3 player.
